Tomorrow’s Hero

I love following the page Humans of New York. They post pictures of people they find in New York and share a thought or a caption about the subject in the photo. The caption reads: “He’s worn it everyday since Halloween.” I saw this picture and I totally got it.

As the mother of a rambunctious, ‘all-boy’, four-year-old,I saw this picture and I totally got it. The excitement, the desire, the passion, the creativity, the light in the eyes of a child when they believe they can be anything and everything they want to be.

Look at this child’s expression. That’s pure innocence and the lived conviction of being able to do whatever you dream of. No one can tell him he can’t be a firefighter, or a firefighter and an astronaut or a firefighter and a chef or artist or whatever he wants to be.

After reading some of the comments, I realize many adults no longer get this: Did his parents wash it? Is he crazy? He needs a shower.

It’s like they’ve forgotten what childhood is all about: play, dreams, imagination, far off places, cut and paste, and lots of mess. Sad actually. Many educators have forgotten too.

As one commenter said: Tomorrow’s Hero. Hopefully he’ll help dreams come true.
